Kultapyörä

Kärehetär

Names: Kärehetär
Käreitär and/or
Domain: Foxes, forest, Metsola

Kärehetär, the Mother of Foxes, is mainly known as a Northern Finnish deity, as the knowledge of her might have spread from northern Finns (Rear Bothnians, North Ostrobothnians and Kainuians) to the Sámi of Finland.

Mother of Foxes

She is called a golden woman, prayed to when hunting foxes. Gold and silver is offered to her, the runosong stating "this is the gold my father won from war". Another runosong from Kainuu goes the same, but also addresses Kuutar alongside her. Another runosong from Kainuu calls her Nokeainen kullan muori "sooty old mother of gold". A similar sounding name Nokiatar is mentioned in North Karelia, but as the mother of otters (this role in Finland is given to Juoletar only).

Etymology

Kärehetär, Käreitär Uncertain. Theories include origin in Mielikki's golden arm wrappings (kultakääreet), in kärki "woodpecker", or Sámi kierâ "tip of a tail" the Finnish equivalent of which, according to sound law, would be *käre.
