Kilikka killed Kalikka

Vuokatti on the map.

In Sotkamo, there is a cave called the Cave of Kilikka and Kalikka. According to a folktale, there are secret caves beneath the ground in the area, which belonged to a haltija. The haltija had two servants, described as either giants or tontut, named Kilikka and Kalikka. They also helped humans if asked correctly, which one noita was able to do to Kalikka in order to get into the halls of this haltija. Kalikka promised he could take the noita there to see the halls and even eat from the tables, but said that one must absolutely not say out a blessing inside the halls.

They went into the caves through rocky gates, finding beautiful halls and delicacies. So awed by them, the noita accidentally blessed their food and in a flash of lightning the whole Vuokatinvaara hill shook from the rumbling of thunder, and the halls were no longer beautiful: there were only shavings in them. The noita woke up on hill far away from the halls and heard the words from Vuokatinvaara:

Kilikka Kalikan tappo
Alla vuoren Vuokatin
Jäätiönlahen perällä

Kilikka killed Kalikka
Beneath the hill of Vuokatti
At the end of the Jäätiönlahti bay

Elsewhere on this website I have explained that according to folklore, this same hill was also once upon a time the home of the moose and reindeer deity Hiisi.
