Terhetär is a luonnotar, even called an air maiden, who sieves mist. In Kainuu, she is asked to sieve mist as a protection against demonic arrows (sudden sharp pain). In South Savo, she is asked to sieve mist to help hunters so the prey wouldn't see or hear the hunter (specifically in context of rabbits), as well as to provide general power as the "forger of the misty needle" (takoja utusen neulan). In North Ostrobothnia, she is addressed as a forest maiden, asked to put animals on the move (specifically in context of birds).
Her connection to the forest and hunting is further supported in Karelian runosongs, where she is called a daughter of Tapio. On the other hand, Karelian runosongs also connect her to the Underworld which does not exactly happen in Finnish runosongs.
