Anni Sallitar from Ruokovesi, South Savo, a daughter of a peasant, went to the Finnish War (in 1808) to fight instead of her brother. In the family, there was only one son but many daughters, so Anni dressed up as a man and went in her brother's stead. She was made a dragoon and brought the horse with her from the war. Later at home, she had the habit of utilizing a soldier's skills and tricks as she could, for example, quickly rise on a horse by jumping on its croup first.
