Juonetar

Names: Juonetar
Uramatar

Juonetar is called the "god of the forest" and "new maid". In an incantation, she is asked as Uramatar not to cover animal tracks, and as Juonetar to make forest animals move.

Mother of Reindeer

Although no runosong specifically states it, Juonetar has been interpreted as the Mother of Reindeer. While she appears in a general hunting incantation in Kainuu, there is one incantation from Ladoga Karelia that is specifically focused on reindeer hunting. Because Sámi juone means "path of reindeer/reindeer tracks", it's then been assumed that she is specifically in control over reindeer.

When I say reindeer, I mean the Finnish forest reindeer.

Etymology

Juonetar Connected to Sámi juone "path of reindeer/reindeer tracks".
Uramatar In Finnish, ura means a "narrow path", as well as a "path of sheep". This name does not appear outside of Kainuu.
