Ilmola

Names: Ilmola

Ilmola, meaning "sky place", is a very rare and unclear name in runosongs. Most of the time, it is Ilmarinen who is called "smith Ilmola" or "smith of Ilmola", so the term could just be a general term for Ilmarinen's dwelling. One of the Ostrobothnian names of Ilmarinen, Ilmalainen, means "from Ilmala".

In one instance, Ilmola appears as a synonym for Ulappala and in another instance, as a synonym for Pohjola. Both get mixed when the wolf is called an old man of Ilmola. I wonder if this could be partially caused by getting mixed up with one of the names of Pohjola, Ilvola ("lynx place").

On a personal level, I am interested if there is any connection between Ilmarinen's name Ilmola, as well as the sky-god name Jumala, and if jumala has any connection to the Proto-Finnic word for the sky, *jilma. I don't think there is any linguistic consensus on this yet.
